vietnamProbably, the most known facts about Vietnam in today’s American society are related to the bitter Vietnam war and very rarely one hears details on cultural aspects of this country (or almost any other country in the world) on popular mass media. Contrary to the harsh memories of the war, Vietnamese music has an extraordinary mellow and relaxing tune to it. Variety of traditional instruments used in Vietnamese music makes it very unique and historical and paints the culture and religious rituals of Vietnam. As usual, this edition of Continental Drift starts off with traditional and folk songs and instrumental pieces that are good representatives of the tradition and history of the music of the country and spends the last half hour on contemporary music. The coverage of Vietnamese music was concluded with a amazing performance of a traditional Vietnamese song by a group of four women. The video of this performance is at the bottom of this page. And last but not least, the Global Shuffle segment showcased the music of some of the friends of the show on MySpace.com where we included two songs by two different bands from a very unknown country in Western Africa, Gabon.
