Egypt
Pyramids and structural remains of ancient Egypt with their beauty and mysteries have always been the center of attention when it comes to Egypt and its culture. But it wont take too long to see the same magnitude of beauty and glamor in music of Egypt. In fact, the earliest material and representational evidence of Egyptian musical instruments dates to the Predynastic period, but the evidence is more securely attested in the Old Kingdom when harps, flutes and double clarinets were played. Percussion instruments, lyres and lutes were added to orchestras by the Middle Kingdom. While preserving the traditional roots, the modern Egyptian music has a touch of Turkish, Spanish, and Arab music styles. In this show, we selected a set of instrumental pieces that would introduce different musical instruments of Egypt along with some traditional and folk songs. We ended the coverage of Egyptian music on this edition of Continental Drift with half an hour of pop music from Egypt and of course we could not resist playing Amr Diab’s Habibi.
