World Music on Continental Drift

Although a state of the United States, Hawaii could be considered an entirely different country culturally and musically and that’s why we dedicated this edition of Continental Drift to Hawaiian music. Compared to its size, Hawaii has had a very disproportionate contribution to the American music. It wasn’t until early 20th century that music of Hawaii hit the charts and became popular; thanks to Bird of Paradise, a 1912 Broadway show. It was after this popularizing event that country music borrowed a lot of Hawaiian steel and slack key guitar styles. This show’s playlist features some of these styles as well as traditional music, chanting, and ukulele music. Of course, we did NOT forget to play music of Israel Kamakawiwo’ole.
