Creation narratives, hunting songs, migrations stories, magical formulas, and many more have been told for generations through song, and the variety of music is infinite. The rich history and atmosphere surrounding the sounds heard tonight are just some of the reasons we here at the Drift decided to stay within our own borders for this one!

Mr. Locke has been nominated by the Native American Music Awards for awards (Nammys) in three categories: Artist of the Year, Flutist of the Year, and Record of the Year for his newest album, Earth Gift. We though it might be appropriate to rebroadcast that show since we had an extensive discussion with Mr. Locke about the history of Native American music, his influences, hoop dance, and many other interesting facts about Native American culture and lifestyle. You can find our interview and the playlist of the show here.

After drifting away to far places in almost all of our past shows, it was about time to bring you the beautiful vibes of the original dwellers of Continental Drift Show’s motherland. As President John F. Kennedy once said: “American Indians remain probably the least understood and most misunderstood Americans of us all.”

On this edition of the Continental Drift Show, we explore the Native American music and culture and to better understand this surprisingly vast and diverse culture we had an interview with Kevin Locke, one the most prominent and award winning Native American flute players and hoop dancers. In our conversation, we discussed various aspects of the Native American music and culture specifically that of South Dakota, Kevin Locke’s home state. If you like to see Kevin Locke perform hoop dance, tell native stories, and play his flute, make sure to check out his performance schedule on his website.
